The entire spectrum of acute critical illnesses and acute and chronic pulmonary diseases may be seen during a month on this elective. The inpatient setting emphasizes critical care, as approximately 60-70% of the inpatient census is critical care patients. The inpatient critical care census includes non-pulmonary critical care such as medical management of trauma patients, neurosurgical patients, and postoperative cardiovascular surgical patients.
Outpatient setting emphasizes chronic diseases, such as asthma, emphysema, restrictive lung disease, and post-hospital follow-up of inpatients. Blood gases, pulmonary functions, ventilator management, hemodynamics, and pulmonary procedures are covered in a typical month. Hands-on practice of line placement and endotracheal intubation is also routinely part of month rotation.
