Second Year Family Practice Residents
Baker
blank

Rebecca Baker-Palmer, MD
Hi, my name is Rebecca Baker-Palmer. I grew up in Monroeville, IN, about 20 minutes from Fort Wayne. I spent four years each in Bloomington, IN and Indianapolis studying Biology and Medicine respectively before returning to the Fort for my Family Medicine Residency. My clinical interests include women’s health, obstetrics, and pediatrics. When I am not immersed in clinical experiences, I enjoy spending time with my husband (we got married just before Residency!), our two cats, going to concerts, hosting friends at our house, watching movies, and playing video games.

Because I am from the area, I was fortunate to have early exposure to the vast opportunities offered by Fort Wayne’s Program. I spent my third year Family Medicine rotation here and was impressed with the staff, the courtesy, and the opportunities presented. When I interviewed, I was further amazed, and what really cemented my decision to come here was the feeling of “home”. I felt comfortable with the staff, the procedures, the obstetrics exposure, the medicine variety, the community, the school systems, and camaraderie amongst the residents.

Aaron Coray, DO
My name is Aaron Coray. I grew up in the small town of Mona, Utah. I graduated from Utah Valley State College with a B.S. in Biology. I attended Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia, where I had an opportunity to do a medical mission to the Dominican Republic. I was originally attracted to Family Medicine because of the wide variety of patients and pathology. My clinical interests include: procedures, osteopathic manipulation, pediatrics, and sports medicine. I like to spend my free time with my wife and three kids. I also enjoy basketball, hiking, spelunking (caving), and most any sport. I was very impressed with the Family Medicine program here in Fort Wayne. The attending physicians are great teachers and the diversity of patients we take care of is impressive. This program will prepare you to do almost anything you want to in Family Medicine.

J. David Kunberger, MD
My name is David Kunberger, and I am a first year resident at FWMEP. I grew up here in Ft. Wayne, and then attended Wabash College in Wabash, Indiana, where I majored in Biology and Psychology. I graduated from Ross University School of Medicine.

I enjoy music, reading, cooking and eating foods of all kind, playing/watching virtually any sport, and spending time with my friends and family. My medical interests include preventative health and sports medicine. I was attracted to FWMEP because the residents all assume a great deal of responsibility in patient care and we have an opportunity to see a wide variety of patients due to the absence of other residency programs citywide. Furthermore, I was impressed by the faculty's commitment to education and the strong community among residents.

Mycal Mansfield, MD
Hello, my name is Mycal L. Mansfield (pronounced just like “Michael”). I was born and raised in Southern Indiana and received my B.S. degree in Biology, along with two minor degrees in Psychology and English from Indiana University. I graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine, and if I am ever in a position to own a second home in my life, I will have one in Grenada! My clinical training was completed in New York City. I lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and worked both in Manhattan and Brooklyn. My training also extended abroad, having spent a year working in the United Kingdom.

Having been gone from Indiana for so long, I am honored to have been given the opportunity to come back to Indiana, specifically Fort Wayne, to continue my medical training. I look forward to being back “home” in the Midwest and anticipate an extensive and very well-rounded medical training atmosphere. My specific professional interests include women and children’s health, preventative medicine, and community medical health education. My interests outside of medicine include international traveling, advanced scuba diving, art and music appreciation, and writing children’s literature.

I graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Utah State University and then completed medical school at the University of Utah. I enjoy many outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, fishing, and skiing. My wife is also from Utah and we have two children.

We are excited to be here in Fort Wayne. It is a great place to live, raise a family, and practice medicine. The unopposed program offers so much volume and variety of training experiences. The faculty and staff is renown for their excellence and supportiveness. I am confident that the level of training here is outstanding and the residents are well prepared.

Mao

Haihong (Henry) Mao, MD
I grew up in one of the biggest cities in the world, Shanghai, China. After I graduated from Shanghai Railway Medical University (now called Tong Ji University Medical School) and finished one year residency training at Ruijin Hospital, I came to the States to pursue advanced training and education. After I received my Master’s degree of Science in computer science/bioinformatics from the University of Chicago, I worked at the Department of Neurology, Northwestern University Medical School and led their bioinformatics team.

Family Medicine is my passion. It is a specialty that has not been well established in China. I was looking for a residency program which can help me develop full scopes of knowledge and skills, including Obstetrics, Geriatrics, and Sports Medicine, and effectively prepare me for my future practice in China. Fort Wayne Medical Education Program was my top choice. I am impressed by the quality of training the program provides. All the faculty, residents, and supporting group are all willing to teach and help interns. Even though I miss my hometown of 16 million people, Fort Wayne is indeed a lovely city which offers a lot of fun places to hang out and a reasonable cost of living.

Mahnaz Qazi, MD
My name is Mahnaz Qazi. I graduated from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan, and then practiced obstetrics in Pakistan. At the same time, I was involved in Community Medicine and School Health Services before coming to the U.S. When I came to the States, I knew that Family Medicine was the field where I would fit best. I was highly impressed by the family friendly and caring atmosphere of the Fort Wayne program as well as by the comprehensive curriculum and unopposed opportunities to practice OB and other procedures. The diverse patient population gives you ample opportunities to be trained as an excellent and confident physician. To me the biggest strength of this program is the quality of residents and a devoted faculty and staff.

My interests are women’s health, obstetrics, preventive medicine, and patient education. In the future I would like to join a family medicine group. I enjoy spending my free time with my two sons and their activities.

ShaRonda Shaw-Berrocal, DO
My name is ShaRonda Shaw-Berrocal and I am a graduate of Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As a native of Chicago, it was very important for me to find a program close to home. The outstanding obstetrical opportunities, warm people, strong medicine service, and procedural training were the strengths that drew me to our program.

My clinical interests are underserved medicine, diabetes, and women’s health, including obstetrics. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my children, sewing, dancing, and traveling.

Yu

Rowena Yu, MD
My name is Rowena C. Yu and I grew up in one of the 7,107 islands of the Philippines called Negros. I did three years of OB-GYN residency in Cebu Doctors' University Hospital, Cebu City, Philippines, before I came here to the United States in 2003. Having a bachelor’s degree in nursing as my premedical course, I worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, as an operating room nurse for four years, mainly in the pediatric surgical service. I have always been interested in Obstetrics and Women's Health, but my interests expanded to Surgery and Pediatrics after being exposed to different working environments.

FWMEP is the best program that will give me the opportunity to do what I used to do as an OB resident, performing not only vaginal deliveries but also operative obstetrics like C-sections, forceps and vacuum deliveries, etc. In a community of approximately 300,000 population, there is a great variety of cases that the resident physicians see everyday, even managing critical cases in the intensive care units. The faculty and staff are never selfish with their time and knowledge, always wanting the residents to learn a lot during the three years of their training. I definitely knew that whoever graduates from this program will face any medical situation with confidence and success and I am so fortunate to be part of it.
