Hello, my name is Kunal Amin. I was born and raised in Anderson, Indiana, and graduated from Wabash College where I majored in Psychology. I then graduated from the Medical University of the Americas on the island of Nevis. On Nevis, I completed my basic sciences, and my clinical rotations were done at various hospitals in Chicago. My clinical interests include geriatrics, sports medicine, and urgent care. In my spare time, I love spending time with my friends and family, especially playing Wii with my nephew Max. I enjoy playing golf and tennis and participating in fantasy football. I also enjoy watching all sports, especially football and mixed martial arts.

I was attracted to Fort Wayne Medical Education Program because of the friendly environment for learning and the ability to take care of a diverse population of people. I was also impressed with the dedication the faculty has towards teaching.

I received my medical degree from Saratov State Medical University in Russia. I chose Fort Wayne’s Family Medicine Residency because medicine experience here prepares you well for Family Medicine. I also like our three hospital system. My clinical interests are dermatology, preventative medicine, and office procedures. After graduation, I would like to join a Family Medicine group in an urban area. I’m married and have two daughters. I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, reading, and theater. I also like the quiet but metropolitan atmosphere of Fort Wayne, and am looking forward to all the outdoor activities it has to offer.

Hi, my name is John Dygert, and I graduated from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Before med school, I went to Benedictine College in Atchison, KS and majored in Biology. I am the second oldest out of nine kids from a fantastic family. Although I grew up mostly in Maine, Ohio, and Colorado, I was born in Indiana so I feel that I am “coming home” in a way. All four of my grandparents live in the state, I know all the words to “Back Home Again in Indiana”, and “Hoosiers” is the greatest sports movie of all time!

I truly loved my sub-I rotation in Fort Wayne and am very excited that I get to work and learn here. I know I’ll be very well trained for my future plans of working in a rural setting. My favorite thing to do is be a Dad! My wife, Jilinda, and our two boys are excited to be Hoosiers too. My other interests include watching and playing baseball, football, basketball, golf, and tennis, fishing, hunting, and many other outdoor activities.

As a graduate of Saratov State Medical School in Russia, I practiced for 11 years as a pediatrician and later as an infectious disease specialist. After moving to the USA, I lived with my husband and two stepsons in northern Indiana while preparing to re-enter medical practice. I also volunteered at a not-for-profit clinic, where I was glad to put my skills to use and learn about the American medical system.

I've chosen FWMEP because of its highly professional faculty and residents, as well as the diverse training opportunities. Most of all, I was impressed by the friendly atmosphere from the very first day. During my residency, I expect to master a number of medical procedures, advance my clinical skills and continue volunteer work, especially with HIV patients.

Having had the opportunity to travel around America, I feel most at home in Indiana, which combines the charm of small-town life with the culture of big cities. The four-season weather and picturesque landscape remind me of Russia. My free time is spent with my husband and our big baby, an 11-year-old Samoyed dog. We like to travel and discover new places by a car, hiking or sailing. I also enjoy gardening, knitting, reading, dancing and playing piano.

Hello! My name is Kathleen A. Heimann – please call me Kate. I was born and raised in the nearby small town of Columbia City, IN. While at Purdue University I researched the opportunities in the medical field and I gravitated to the osteopathic philosophy of practicing medicine and haven’t looked back. Having graduated from COMP (College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific) in Pomona, CA and worked in hospitals across the country, I found that Fort Wayne’s family medicine program is the best spot for one-on-one learning and opportunities for procedural experience while
quickly gaining independence as a training physician.

Hello! I grew up in Los Angeles, CA where I earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Biomedical Physics and a Master’s degree in Biology at California State University, Northridge, before attending Medical school. I did a preliminary year of surgical residency at Nassau University Medical Center before coming to Fort Wayne for Family Medicine.

I chose Fort Wayne because it is an unopposed program with ample opportunity for office procedures; gives me the ability to tailor my program; and has warm and friendly people. Fort Wayne also provides great learning prospects with a broad patient population and moonlighting opportunities. Outside the hospital I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, boating and stargazing. My wife and I enjoy movies, hiking, restaurants, travel, and our cat (whose name I believe is “Get Down”). In my spare time I have also written several patents and am currently writing a book on Physics.

Greetings! I was born and raised in the rural town of Creston, Iowa. I earned a B.A. degree in biochemistry and a B.S. degree in marketing from Simpson College and Upper Iowa University, respectively. Throughout my undergraduate journey, I was also a self-employed sales professional for nine years. Following this, I attended medical school at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa. It was during this time that I fell in love with family medicine as a profession.

So how did this Hawkeye become a Hoosier? In searching for an ideal residency program, I wanted one which would prepare me with the requisite skills to practice confidently the full spectrum of rural, family medicine. The Fort Wayne Medical Education Program stood out as a clear leader in this respect! My clinical interests include rural medicine, obstetrics, chronic disease management, and emergency medicine. In my personal life, I enjoy old movies, being with friends and family, cheesy humor, spontaneous road trips, cooking, wine, and American history.

Welcome to Fort Wayne Medical Education Program! My life has taken me all across the country and I have lived in a number of different communities, but Fort Wayne has always been home and it has long been a dream of mine to return and practice medicine in the community I love so much. I grew up in the neighboring small town of Grabill and attended Woodlan High School. I went on to study psychology at Wabash College, and finally attended Arizona College of Osteopathic medicine in Glendale, Arizona.

My wife, Sarah, and I met in medical school and were married last year. We have a new daughter who brings great joy to our life. We have rotated in communities and interviewed with programs throughout the American Southwest, but we chose Fort Wayne because of its strong history of producing excellent family physicians, the wonderful faculty, and the quality of the residents. Everyone is very helpful and knowledgeable. The community is a great place to live and work with its low cost of living, excellent medical environment, and opportunities for young families. After my wife and I completed interviewing season, Fort Wayne was an easy choice. In our spare time, my wife and I enjoy spending time with our daughter, snowboarding, and spending time in the outdoors.

Hi! My name is Sarah. I adventured out to my husband’s home town in the Midwest for the first time in the summer of 2008. Since that time, our little family has expanded to three with the addition of the most beautiful, wide-eyed little girl. My family is the most important part of my life! As for traveling to Indiana, I experienced my first glimpse of fire flies while dodging an Amish buggy exiting the hitching posts at the local Walmart. One might speculate that this is a “slight” culture shock from my upbringing in the small city of Reno, Nevada. However, with this new opportunity, I have witnessed some of the most breath-taking colors and shades of autumn, and embraced some of the most heart-warming hospitality of country folk.

I graduated with my B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Nevada, Reno. A couple years later I made my way down to Phoenix, and completed my D.O. degree at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Finally, as for my personal interest, I would have to say that this quote is a good summary. “Ride to live. Live to ride.” I love the snow. I love the outdoors. And above all, I love to snowboard. The Colorado Rockies and Sierra Nevada slopes will always have a place in my heart. Besides riding, I run marathons, backpack, camp, kayak, cycle and swim. I love to read, and hope to someday write a book.

I grew up in South-Central Idaho in the Magic Valley area, just outside the City of Paul. My late father Richard H. Swensen, owned a local grocery store, Swensen’s Magic Market, in which I learned the value of hard work through my Junior High and High School years. After High School I attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho for two semesters. I then served a two year religious mission in Barcelona, Spain for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I returned and continued my academic studies at Idaho State and earned my BA in Spanish, accomplishing my pre-medical coursework concomitantly.

I completed my medical school education at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and have chosen family medicine because I want to become involved in Preventive Care, and to be able to influence my patients to live healthy, fulfilling lives.

My wife and I have two little girls and a brand new baby boy. We are glad to be in Fort Wayne which is a community that fosters and facilitates family life. In my free time I love going to the zoo with my kids, playing tennis, basketball, and pulling my two little kids in their trailer behind my mountain bike.
