As a resident in Indiana, you will have the opportunity to officially moonlight starting your second year. While it is true that moonlighting can provide a substantial supplement to your residency salary, moonlighting also substantially supplements your education. In general, you will have much more responsibility and independence, which not only forces you to learn but also quickly points out your weaknesses. You will see many things working in the ER or urgent care that you would not have experienced otherwise, and residents generally learn something new every shift.
Fort Wayne makes it much easier for residents to moonlight than most residencies. The night float and the light call schedule during second and third year give you the time and energy to moonlight during any given month. This way, you can have some control over the nights that you work; plus, you get paid for it. Unlike many programs, the residency also covers residents’ malpractice insurance.
Fort Wayne has numerous moonlighting opportunities both within the city and in the numerous surrounding towns. From ER work to urgent care to physicals, you can decide what you want to do and get as much of it as you want. The following is a summary of some of the opportunities available:
ER – Residents work in seven different ERs around Fort Wayne. Pay ranges from $70-$95 per
hour. Some ERs offer solo work, others as second doc. In either case, you will see a good mix
of inpatient, outpatient, and critical medicine and have plenty of opportunities for procedures.
Urgent Care – Residents work in three urgent care centers in and around Fort Wayne.
Pay ranges from $70-$80 per hour. This type of acute care setting tends to be rather similar to
clinic medicine, and you will gain good experience at seeing high volumes of patients and triage.
Many office-type procedures are available.
Physicals – Numerous opportunities to do school physicals are available in the fall with varying
pay rates –usually $60-$100 per hour. Disability physicals can also be done year round and pay
$35 per physical.
Allen County Employee Clinic – Call coverage pays $50 per night shift and $100 per weekend
shift. This call is taken from home.
