Junior Clerkship
The FWMEP is an enthusiastic participant in the required third year clerkship in Family Medicine of Indiana University School of Medicine. We host from 24 to 30 students each year in small groups, housing them in one of two beautiful furnished apartments.

Past students have rated their family medicine experience in Fort Wayne as excellent to outstanding, and the family medicine clerkship is the highest rated of all the required third year clerkships at IUSOM.

Student-preceptor assignments on the family medicine clerkship are well thought out with careful consideration to the student’s individual learning issues and attention to making a good teaching match. Didactics are targeted specifically to the third year student and vary in complexity as students become more proficient during their third year. The didactics always include active learning in hands on workshops as well as lectures and case conferences. The family medicine clerkship allows students the opportunity to satisfy level II achievement in two IUSOM competencies, Effective Communication and Social and Community Context of Health Care.

Making sure students are comfortable and content while they are visiting Fort Wayne is a very high priority. Lunches are provided during didactic days and at least one evening entertainment event-dinner-ballgame-theater is provided for each rotation. Many students who rotate with us a third year students on the clerkship return to enjoy senior electives at our location as well.
